Research Proposal Review- Introduction, Types of Review, Description, and Keynote

Introduction

A research proposal review evaluates the ethical and scientific aspects of a study. It also ensures participant safety and adherence to ethical guidelines. Committees analyze risks and benefits and study design for validity. Additionally, they assess data collection methods and confidentiality protocols. Full board reviews are conducted for high-risk studies, while expedited reviews address minimal-risk projects. However, some studies qualify for exemption if they pose no risk. Types of Review

Description

  • Full Board Review
    Required for:
    1. Research involving high-risk procedures or vulnerable populations (e.g., children, pregnant women, critically ill patients).
    2. Studies involving invasive procedures or sensitive topics, such as genetic testing or psychological stress.
    3. Clinical trials, drug testing, or high-risk medical interventions.
    Why: It involves a thorough evaluation by the ethics committee to ensure participant safety and compliance with ethical standards.
  • Expedited Review
    Required for:
    1. Research with minimal risk (e.g., blood sample collection, non-invasive procedures).
    2. Studies involving data analysis of previously collected samples or standard diagnostic tests.
    3. Research not requiring significant physical or emotional risk to participants.
    Why: A smaller subcommittee reviews the proposal, speeding up the approval process while maintaining ethical oversight.
  • Exemption from Review
    Required for:
    1. Research involving publicly available data, anonymous surveys, or educational assessments.
    2. Studies where there is no direct interaction with participants and no identifiable private information is used.
    Why: Such studies pose no risk to participants and meet the criteria for exemption.
