Short Descriptions of Top 10 Fungal Pathogens

Candida albicans

  • A yeast-like fungus that is part of the normal flora but can cause oral thrush, vaginal candidiasis, and systemic infections in immunocompromised individuals.

Aspergillus fumigatus

  • A filamentous fungus causing aspergillosis, particularly in immunocompromised patients. It can affect the lungs, sinuses, and other organs.

Cryptococcus neoformans

Histoplasma capsulatum

  • A dimorphic fungus causes histoplasmosis, which primarily affects the lungs. It is found in soil contaminated with bird or bat droppings.

Blastomyces dermatitidis

  • A dimorphic fungus responsible for blastomycosis, a pulmonary and sometimes systemic fungal infection, often acquired through inhaling spores in moist soil.

Coccidioides immitis (and C. posadasii)

  • These dimorphic fungi cause coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever), a respiratory disease endemic to arid regions of the Americas.

Pneumocystis jirovecii

  • A fungus causing Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), is a life-threatening condition in immunocompromised individuals, particularly those with HIV/AIDS.

Mucor species (and Rhizopus spp.)

  • These fungi cause mucormycosis, a rapidly progressing and often fatal disease, particularly in diabetics and immunocompromised individuals.

Trichophyton spp.

  • A dermatophyte causes superficial fungal infections, such as tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea corporis (ringworm), and onychomycosis (nail infections).

Sporothrix schenckii

  • A dimorphic fungus is responsible for sporotrichosis (rose gardener’s disease), a subcutaneous infection acquired through skin trauma.
