Anemometer: Introduction, Principle, Handling Procedure, Application, and Keynotes

Introduction

  • An anemometer measures wind speed.
  • It also measures wind pressure.
  • The name comes from “anemos”.
  • “Anemos” is Greek for wind.
  • Leon Battista Alberti invented it.
  • He designed it in 1450.
  • It tracks weather pattern changes.

Principle

  • Most use mechanical rotation principles.
  • Wind pushes the cup or propeller blades.
  • Rotation speed matches wind velocity.
  • Thermal types use cooling rates.
  • Passing air cools heated wires.
  • Electrical resistance changes with cooling.
  • Ultrasonic types use sound waves.
  • Wind alters sound travel time.

Handling Procedure

  • Choose an open, unobstructed area.
  • Avoid walls, trees, and buildings.
  • Mount the device vertically straight.
  • Turn on the digital display.
  • Face the sensors into the wind.
  • Hold portable units at arm’s length.
  • Wait for readings to stabilize.
  • Record the average wind speed.
  • Clean sensors after every use.
  • Store in a protective case.

Application

  • Weather stations forecast local weather.
  • Airports monitor safe takeoff conditions.
  • Ships navigate ocean wind currents.
  • HVAC technicians balance building airflow.
  • Wind farms optimize turbine placement.
  • Aerospace teams test drone flight.

Keynotes

  • Calibration ensures data accuracy limits.
  • Strong storms can damage cups.
  • Ice jams mechanical rotating parts.
  • Digital units require fresh batteries.
