Common Instruments and Reagents Used in Hematology Laboratory: Introduction, List of Instruments and Reagents, and Short Description

Introduction of Common Instruments and Reagents Used in Hematology Laboratory

Hematology is an integral branch of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine that deals with the study of blood, blood-forming organs (bone marrow, thymus, spleen, lymph nodes), blood diseases like anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, leukemia, and infection indicators like typhoid (low total leukocyte count with increased lymphocytes), other bacterial infections (increased neutrophils count), parasitic infection (increased eosinophils number) and so on. Complete blood count (CBC) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) tests are the common hematologic assays preferred by clinicians.

Instruments and Reagents Short Description

Sysmex poch-100i

Sysmex pocH-100i is a 3 components separation of leukocytes (neutrophils, lymphocytes, and remaining cells mixed count) hematology analyzer which provides complete blood count without blast or other conditions (anemia, thrombocytopenia) comments.

Hematology Analyzer or Sysmex XS 1000i cell counter

Hematology Analyzer or Sysmex XS 1000i Cell Counter is a 5 components cell analyzer and gives the status complete blood count with five different cells of leukocytes (neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil, lymphocytes, and monocytes) and even blast and other conditions of test blood.

Tube Roller Mixer or Blood Collection Mixer

Tube Roller Mixer or Blood Collection Mixer is used for mixing blood samples and cells.

ESR stand

ESR stand: It is used to hold ESR tubes. This ESR stand is made from good quality plastic or metal and coated with enamel.

Glass slide

Glass slides are mandatory in Hematology laboratories for a variety of purposes like PBS, reticulocyte count, etc.

Fig. Glass slide

Wright stain

It is also called Romanowsky stain and is a mixture of methylene blue and derivates complexed by Eosin. It is a hematologic stain that clears the way for the differentiation of blood cell types.

Blood coagulometer

Blood coagulometer: It is an analyzer applied to test the coagulation efficiency of blood so as to diagnose and assess bleeding disorders.

Water bath

It is a laboratory constant temperature equipment, providing a heat source for
various devices that need heating and it is used to keep water at a constant temperature for
incubating test samples in a laboratory.

Microscope

The microscope is the common instrument used in hematology laboratories for a variety of purposes like
manual total leukocyte count, RBC count, platelets count, differential leukocyte count, reticulocyte count, etc.

Improved Neubauer’s counting chamber

Improved Neubauer’s counting chamber: It is the most useful for counting cells like WBCs, RBCs, platelets, spermatozoa, etc.

Micropipettes

Micropipettes are the common and essential laboratory instruments used to accurately and precisely transfer liquid in the microliter volume.

WBC diluting fluid or Turk’s solution

WBC diluting fluid or Turk’s solution: It is used for visualization of white blood cells(WBCs) and it contains crystal violet, acetic acid, and distilled water. The solution destroys the others cells of blood samples like red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets and stains the nuclei of the WBCs, making them easier to see and count.

Cedarwood oil

Cedarwood oil is used as an immersion medium to replace the air gap which helps to correct mismatch footage and its refractive index of around 1.51 which is similar to glass. This enhances the resolution of the high-power immersion objective and increases numerical aperture (NA) by lowering refraction.

Timer or stopwatch

Laboratory Digital Timer is mandatory in the laboratory for a variety of steps like staining, incubating the test samples, assaying blood clotting time, bleeding time, etc. As we know that precisely measure time for procedures and laboratory work that require precise operations.  With time-sensitive products, having a faulty or inefficient timer can create all the differences in the final output.

Manual Blood Cell Counter 5 Keys or Differential Cell Counter

Manual Blood Cell Counter 5 Keys or Differential Cell Counter is common equipment used in hematology laboratories to count neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocyte of white blood cells (leukocytes).
