Introduction

Thyroid CT Scan/Thyroid Computed Tomography Imaging is a technique used to scan the thyroid gland that controls metabolism. It is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the middle of the lower neck having normal size of about 2 cm thick, 3 cm wide, and 5 cm long (each lobe) to know the abnormal features like incidental thyroid nodules (ITNs) and plays a significant role in the evaluation of thyroid cancer.

Uses of Thyroid CT Scan

The application of ‘Thyroid Computed Tomography Imaging’ is as follows-

1. To know the lumps, nodules, or other growths of the thyroid gland.
2. Detection for swelling of the thyroid
3. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
4. Hypothyroidism (underactive)
5. To find out goiter (an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid).
6. Detection of thyroid cancer

Keynotes on Thyroid CT-Scan

• A thyroid ultrasound is also applied to examine the cysts, nodules, and tumors of the thyroid.

• An ultrasound is a painless procedure in which sound waves are used to generate images of the inside of our body.

• Thyroid storm is a life-threatening health problem that is associated with uncontrolled hyperthyroidism (low TSH level but high T3 and T4 levels) and the patient feels heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature dangerously high levels.

• Both (Thyroid CT Scan and Thyroid USG) are part of nuclear medicine since a radioactive material i.e. radioisotope/ radionuclide (tracer) is given to the patient prior to the scan.

• A thyroid scan is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women besides the radiation exposure being minimal and short-term.

• Normally avoid food having iodine content like dairy products, sushi, shellfish, seaweed, iodized salt, kelp, and seasonings that contain iodized salt. And also discontinue medication of antihistamines, cough syrups, and multivitamins from 4 to 6 weeks before scanning.

• In some cases, a radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) test with the scan can be requested to measure the thyroid’s reaction.
