DTPA Renal Scan: Introduction, Procedure Uses, Centers in Kathmandu, Address, Contact Number, and Keynotes

Introduction

DTPA stands for diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid and it is an amino polycarboxylic acid consisting of a diethylenetriamine backbone with five carboxymethyl groups. DTPA Renal Scan is used to know how the left and right kidneys work comparatively. This test also recognizes any sites of blockages to be identified and detected.

Procedure

A cannula is placed in a vein in the arm and via this small injection, a radioactive tracer is administered.
This injection allows the kidneys and bladder to be seen by the camera. Multiple Images are taken for 30 minutes whilst lying under the camera. A second injection of Lasix may be given to assist the kidneys/rentals to empty. This is then mathematically calculated.

Keynotes on DTPA Renal Scan

  • DTPA Renal Scan takes approximately 1.5 hours.
  • The patient needs to drink 1 liter of water and be finished 1 hour prior to his/her appointment time. There is no need to hold on to the water he/she can urinate when needed.
  • There are no reported side effects from this test. If however, Lasix is administered it is advised the patient keeps well hydrated for 4 hours following the procedure. This will ensure he/she does not feel unwell due to dehydration.
  • As a result of the radioactive injection, the patient will be giving off a small amount of radiation. It is advisable he/she limits his/her time in close proximity to pregnant women and children for 24 hours following the test.
  • Normally regular medication can not be ignored.
