Obesity Package: Introduction, Related Laboratory Tests, and Keynotes

Introduction of Obesity Package

Obesity is the condition of being grossly fat or overweight. Whether people are suffering from
it or not is confirmed via body mass index (BMI). The common clinical laboratory tests that are beneficial
to assay in this scenario are mentioned in the laboratory tests section.

Laboratory Tests for Obesity Package

The common tests included in this package are-

  • Fasting blood sugar (FBS) /Glucose Fasting: Fasting blood sugar is tested in the morning after overnight fasting and it is a simple, common, safe blood assay that can diagnose prediabetes, diabetes, and gestational diabetes and its normal range are within 70 to 99 mg/dL.
  • Glucose PP: Two-hour postprandial glucose test is a blood sugar assay in which a blood sample is drawn just after 2 hours of taking a meal. The normal range of the glucose PP test is less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L).
  • HbA1C: HbA1c (Hemoglobin A1c )/Glyco Hb is a very useful test reflecting blood glucose levels over a period of the last 10 -12 weeks.
  • Liver Function Test: Liver Function Test (LFT) is a common panel and its contents are SGOT/AST, SGPT/ALT, alkaline phosphate (ALP), total protein, albumin, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and serum bilirubin. LFT functions are clear from the title, and thus it helps to screen for liver infections, disease prognosis, alcoholic hepatitis, and liver cirrhosis, and monitor possible effects of medications.
  • Lipid Profile Test: Lipid profile tests are serum total cholesterol, serum HDL cholesterol, Serum triglycerides, and LDL. This panel of tests assists in the prediction of the risk for heart disease and stroke.
  • Urine Microalbumin Test: It is a urine test that is useful for detecting kidney complications (nephropathy) very early.
  • Urine Routine Examination (R/E): Urine R/E is mainly used to detect and manage a wide range of disorders like urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney disease, and diabetes.
  • TSH: Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is a pituitary hormone that stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine, and then triiodothyronine which stimulates the metabolism of almost all tissues in the body. This is the reason, TSH is the common hormone test that is requested by the doctor to check your body’s metabolic activities. If the level of TSH is higher than normal, the condition is called hypothyroidism while a level less than normal, is called hyperthyroidism.

Keynotes on Obesity Package

  • The urine microalbumin test is also called the microalbuminuria assay.
  • As we know, each laboratory establishes its own reference interval based on its methodology. However, the common normal range of liver function tests are as follows-
S. NoLiver Function TestsNormal Range
1.ALT/SGPT4-36 IU/L
2.AST/SGOT5-30 IU/L
3.ALP30 to 120 IU/L
4.Total protein60-80 g/L
5.Albumin35-50 g/L
6.Bilirubin2 to 17 µmol/L
