BMI (Body Mass Index): Introduction, Your Suggested Weight, and Keynotes

Introduction of BMI

BMI stands for body mass index and it is a physical measurement applied to assess an individual’s total amount of body fat. It was invented by Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet in the 1800s and consequently is sometimes called the Quetelet index. The BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms (kg) by your height in meters squared (m2) and it is expressed as kg/m2. Calculate your BMI using the table.

Keynotes on BMI

  • Other measures of obesity are waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-hip ratio, and waist-height ratio.
  • The BMI is a simple, cheap screening tool used to identify possible weight problems for people and its measurement is useful to assess who needs further testing to identify health risks (heart disease) and individuals at risk will need further assessments like skinfold thickness test, diet, physical activity level, family history, and other related health screenings.
  • Underweight individuals are prone to compromise immune function with increased susceptibility to infections, anemia, menstrual irregularities, Osteoporosis, and impaired fertility.
  • Obese individuals have an increased risk of disorders like Diabetes (type 2), gall bladder disease, dyslipidemia, hypertension, insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, sleep apnoea, breathlessness, asthma, social isolation and depression, daytime sleepiness and fatigue, cardiovascular diseases (stroke, heart attack), gout /hyperuricemia, osteoarthritis, respiratory disease, hernia and psychological problems.
