Gram Positive Bacilli or Rods: Introduction, List of Bacteria, Keynotes, and Related Pictures

Introduction of Gram Positive Rods (GPR)

Gram Positive Bacilli (GPB)‘ is also called Gram Positive Rods (GPR) bacteria which retain crystal violet dye and stain blue or purple on Gram’s staining. The most common medically important bacteria of GPR are Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium leprae, Listeria monocytogenes, Nocardia asteroides, Actinomyces israelii, Bacillus anthracis, Bacillus cereus, Bifidobacterium species, Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Clostridium species.

Keynotes on Gram Positive Rods

  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis is weakly Gram-positive rods due to the presence of coating on its cell surface mycolic acid.
  • Actinomyces and Nocardia are gram-positive bacilli or rods characterized by filamentous and tree-like branching growth.
  • Nocardia are weakly acid-fast following staining with the modified Ziehl-Neelsen or Kinyoun’s stain whereas Actinomyces are not acid-fast.
  • Actinomyces are anaerobic but Nocardia and Streptomyces are aerobic bacteria.
