Vials of MGIT PANTA antibiotic supplement and MGIT Growth Supplement for suppressing contamination and enriching Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Table of Contents
In microbiology and Tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics, PANTA is an antimicrobial supplement used to prevent the overgrowth of contaminating microorganisms in liquid culture media. It is primarily used with the BD BACTEC MGIT 960 system.
PANTA is a selective antibiotic cocktail designed for the primary isolation of mycobacteria from clinical specimens. Because Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a slow-growing organism (taking weeks to form colonies), faster-growing bacteria and fungi in non-sterile samples (like sputum) can easily overwhelm the culture. PANTA suppresses these contaminants, allowing mycobacteria to grow undisturbed.
PANTA is a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder containing five specific antimicrobial agents:
| Component | Function | Target Organisms |
| Polymyxin B | Cell membrane disruption | Gram-negative bacteria |
| Amphotericin B | Antifungal agent | Yeasts and fungi |
| Nalidixic Acid | DNA synthesis inhibitor | Gram-negative bacteria |
| Trimethoprim | Dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor | Broad spectrum (Gram+/-) |
| Azlocillin | Cell wall synthesis inhibitor | Broad spectrum (Gram+/-) |
