Introduction of CT KUB

A CT KUB stands for computerized tomography of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. The use of the CT KUB scan is to obtain images from various angles of the urinary system and its surrounding structures, that enclose the area from the superior poles of the kidneys down to the pubic symphysis. These images are acquired in cross-sections or slices for clinical diagnosis.
Uses of CT KUB
It is beneficial for the following conditions-
- Acute undiagnosed abdominopelvic pain lacking a clear etiology
- Other clinical situations like Intestinal blockage, gall bladder or urinary bladder stones, malignancies, and complications of inflammation or infection

- The volume of radiation involved in CT scans is harmful and It is believed that radiation exposure during each scan is equivalent to between a few months and years of exposure to natural radiation from the environment.
- The probability of developing cancer through exposure is thought to be very small after many years i.e. < 1 in 2000.
- CT scan is not advisable for pregnant women.
- Intravenous urography (IVU) is also referred to as intravenous pyelography (IVP) or excretory urography (EU).
- In pregnancy, alternative imaging modalities rather than CT KUB, where possible, such as ultrasound or MRI, which do not expose the pregnant woman to ionizing radiation, are preferred.
- CT KUB scan is a painless procedure that even lasts a little longer in duration than conventional KUB radiographs.
